Task It ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your personal information when you use our Task It mobile application ("App") or related services, which connect users seeking services with service providers in Kenya. By using the App, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

a. Personal Information

  • User Accounts: When you register as a user or service provider, we collect your name, email address, phone number, and, for service providers, identification details (e.g., ID number, professional certifications) to verify your identity.
  • Profile Information: You may provide additional details, such as a profile photo, address, or service preferences, to enhance your profile.
  • Payment Information: For transactions, we collect payment details (e.g., mobile money or bank card information) processed through our third-party payment providers, MPesa and Stripe. We do not store full payment details on our servers.
  • Location Data: With your explicit consent, we collect geolocation data to match you with nearby service providers or users.
  • Communication Data: When you use our in-app chat feature, we collect and process messages exchanged between users and service providers to facilitate service connections and provide customer support.
  • Ratings and Reviews: We collect ratings and reviews provided by users about service providers, which may include textual feedback and ratings scores associated with user profiles.
  • Background Check Data: For service providers, we may collect and process background check information, such as criminal records, professional certifications, or other verification data, to ensure the trustworthiness of our service providers.

b. Non-Personal Information

  • Usage Data: We collect information about how you interact with the App, such as pages visited, features used, and time spent on the App, to analyze and improve performance.
  • Device Information: We collect device details, such as device type, operating system, IP address, and browser type, to optimize App functionality.
  • Cookies and Tracking: We use cookies and similar technologies to enhance user experience and analyze usage trends through tools like PostHog.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Facilitate connections between users and service providers for service bookings.
  • Process payments and issue refunds through MPesa and Stripe.
  • Verify service provider credentials through background checks to ensure trust and safety.
  • Provide customer support and respond to inquiries via in-app chat or other channels.
  • Personalize your experience, such as recommending relevant services based on your preferences or location.
  • Improve the App’s functionality and user experience through analytics (e.g., PostHog).
  • Send notifications, updates, or promotional offers, with your consent where required.
  • Resolve disputes or ensure compliance with our terms of service using in-app chat data.
  • Comply with legal obligations under Kenyan law, including the Data Protection Act, 2019.
  • Display ratings and reviews to enhance service provider reputation and inform user choices.

3. How We Share Your Information

We may share your information in the following cases:

  • With Service Providers or Users: To facilitate service bookings, we share relevant details (e.g., name, contact information, location) between users and service providers.
  • Third-Party Service Providers: We work with trusted third parties, including:
  • MPesa and Stripe for payment processing.
  • PostHog for analytics, using aggregated or anonymized data.
  • These providers process data on our behalf under strict confidentiality agreements and in compliance with applicable data protection laws.
  • Background Check Partners: We may share service provider data with third-party verification services to conduct background checks, as necessary.
  • Legal Compliance: We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect our rights, safety, or property, in accordance with Kenyan regulations.
  • Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred to the new entity, with notice to you where required.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

4. Data Storage and Security

  • Storage: Your data is stored on secure servers located in Kenya or other jurisdictions with equivalent data protection standards.
  • Security Measures: We use industry-standard encryption, access controls, and regular security audits to protect your data. Sensitive data, such as background check information and payment details, is stored securely with access restricted to authorized personnel only. However, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
  • Retention: We retain your data only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this policy or as required by law. For example:
  • Account data is retained while your account is active.
  • Transaction records may be kept for up to seven years to comply with Kenyan tax and financial regulations.
  • In-app chat data may be stored for a limited period (e.g., 30 days) to resolve disputes or ensure compliance, after which it is deleted unless otherwise required by law.
  • Background check data is retained only as long as necessary for verification purposes or as required by law.

5. Your Rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your data, subject to legal obligations (e.g., tax or financial records).
  • Restriction: Request restriction of data processing in certain circumstances.
  • Objection: Object to processing of your data for marketing or other purposes.
  • Data Portability: Request a copy of your data in a structured, machine-readable format.

6. Location Data

  • We collect precise or approximate location data only with your explicit consent to match you with nearby service providers or users.
  • You can disable location services in your device settings, but this may limit the App’s functionality.

7. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

  • We use cookies and similar technologies to enhance your experience, such as remembering login details or tracking usage patterns via PostHog.
  • You can manage cookie preferences through your browser settings, but disabling cookies may affect App functionality.

8. Third-Party Services

Task It uses third-party services to enhance our platform, including:

  • MPesa and Stripe for payment processing. These services have their own privacy policies that govern how they handle your payment data.
  • PostHog for analytics. We share non-personal, aggregated data to analyze and improve the App’s performance.

We ensure that all third-party service providers comply with applicable data protection laws and process your data only as necessary to provide their services.

9. International Data Transfers

Some third-party service providers, such as Stripe, may be located outside Kenya. When we transfer your data internationally, we ensure that the recipient provides an adequate level of protection in accordance with Kenyan data protection laws, such as through standard data protection clauses or other safeguards.

10. Third-Party Links

The App may contain links to third-party websites or services (e.g., payment gateways). We are not responsible for their privacy practices. Please review their privacy policies before sharing information.

11. Children’s Privacy

Task It is not intended for use by individuals under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected such data, we will delete it promptly.

12. Compliance with Kenyan Law

Task It is committed to complying with Kenyan data protection laws, including the Data Protection Act, 2019, and its associated regulations, such as the Data Protection (General) Regulations, 2021. We are registered with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) as required by law. [Note: If you are not yet registered, you must register with the ODPC as a data controller or processor.]


13. Updates to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of changes by posting the new policy on the App and updating the "Effective Date" at the top. Your continued use of the App after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the new policy.
